Better late than never……Michael Collins was a panellist last week during an entertainment session at MIPIM in Cannes.  The session was organised by Bart Dohmen of BRC Imagination Arts and focused on the important and growing role of  visitor attractions in retail and mixed use schemes.  LDP has performed dozens of assignments for developers taking entertainment into malls and also for retail and mixed use developers planning to extract maximum benefit from entertainment anchors.  Michael brought this experience and knowledge of the potential impacts for the wider development to the discussion.

We are looking forward to IAAPA and will be leaving for Orlando tomorrow. This IAAPA will be a special one for LDP as it is a chance for us to introduce our new Partner, James Kennard, to many of our colleagues in the theme park, attractions and entertainment industry.  Many of you will already know James from his time at Economics Research Associates.  James has a decade of experience in real estate economics and as well as visitor attractions and leisure, has a fantastic knowledge of residential and commercial real estate, having been an Associate Partner at Knight Frank prior to joining us in September.

James is an excellent addition to our team and has already worked on LDP projects in markets as diverse as Nigeria, the UAE, the Netherlands and Greece.

Have a great IAAPA everyone!

Yael is looking forward to co-chairing her session at the TiLEforum in Florence this week.  The two part session will explore all different levels of branding and visitor experiences, from rebranding a tourism destination, to agro hotels, the Swarovski Crystal Worlds, and the Loisium Wine World experience.  We will explore how brands are created, and unique experiences incorporated to increase the brand’s profile, and then most importantly… how do you maintain brand integrity in a visitor attraction/experience? The unique mix of speakers should help create a diverse and interactive setting for discussion. More information on the conference can be found at http://www.tileweb.org/tileforum%20programme.html

Euro Attractions Show and IP in theme parks October 23, 2011

It was great to see so many of our colleagues and friends from the industry at the Euro Attractions Show in our home town of London.  I moderated a session on Intellectual Property in attractions and particularly theme parks and had great speakers including people from Nickelodeon and Walibi.  I provided a benchmarking comparison of this showing some of the areas IP can positively impact a theme park business and other areas where it has less effect.  No doubt it is presently one of the hot topics in the industry and we have this year prepared feasibility studies for branded theme parks and attractions as well as looking at the addition of IP to existing sites.

We will update when the slides become available on the IAAPA website but also plan an article around the topic.

LDP principal Yael Coifman is looking forward to this panel discussion on the challenges of developing new entertainment projects.  “This session is a unique opportunity to have an honest conversation about challenges and problems that arise while developing a project,” said Yael.  “Given the terrific range of panelists, it gives people from different disciplines a chance to raise issues from their past experience, as well as the solutions that were found, and everyone can learn ways to help future projects.”

The panel will consist of leading operators from the Merlin Entertainments Group and Continuum (the two largest attraction operators in the UK) as well as designers and project managers from a group of leading UK and international companies.  TiLEzone will be held on Wednesday, March 16th at the London Transport Museum.  More information on the session and panelists can be found on http://www.tileweb.org/tilezone%20programme.html

We have completed some really interesting research into the impact of the last major recession on the theme park and visitor attraction industry.  The findings are of real value for operators and owners and are particularly important when looking to this coming season.  Look out for the article in the November issue of Interpark which should be available at IAAPA.
